US citizenship test study guide

This naturalization civics test study plan starts with the question bank for your filing date. Study a little at a time, then return to the topics you miss.

1. Choose the right test

Use the date you filed Form N-400. Before October 20, 2025 means the 2008 test; on or after that date means the 2025 test. Check your version.

2. Read the questions in small groups

Browse the complete 128-question or 100-question list. Focus on one topic at a time. If a question asks for two or three examples, practice saying the requested number.

3. Answer aloud

The civics portion is an oral test. Read or hear each question, say an answer before you look, then compare your response with the accepted USCIS answers. Our oral practice can read questions aloud.

4. Repeat what you miss

Mark missed answers during practice. The flashcard tool brings missed questions back sooner and helps you see weak topics. Your history stays in your browser. You can use the site without creating an account.

5. Rehearse the test

Try the mock interview. It stops at the same pass and fail thresholds as the actual civics test. A practice score helps guide study, but only USCIS can score the real interview.

Before your interview

Check USCIS test updates for answers that change after elections or appointments. Recheck saved state-specific answers and verify elected officials close to your interview.
